From a Cycle of Destruction to a New Sense of Hope
At 17 George began using drugs, and his substance of choice was cough medicine. “It made me feel happy and like I was the way people wanted me to be,” he recalls. It also set him on a destructive downhill spiral.
“Being able to see where I was going but not being able to stop made me swallow my pride and come to the Mission to check it out. They sent me with some of the students to fill pantry boxes. It allowed me to realize that even though I don’t have my life together, I can still be a good person… I can still contribute… I can still be helpful to other people… and that gave me a lot of hope. And hope is what this place is about.”
