The steam rises from the plate as Kevin takes his first bite. The room is warm. Someone says, “Welcome. You belong here.”
For Kevin, that first meal at Bridgeport Rescue Mission wasn’t just food. It was the beginning of hope.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Kevin tells me now, sitting in the same dining room where his journey began. Today, he’s studying to become a nurse. But it all started with that first plate of food—and someone like you who made it possible.
That first meal led to housing. Housing led to our recovery program. The program led to education. Now he says, “I discovered a passion for learning and a renewed sense of purpose.”
This is what your kindness does. It starts with something as simple as mashed potatoes and gravy, warm bread, and turkey. But it becomes so much more—safety, dignity, and the chance to dream again.
Kevin puts it perfectly:
“Recovery isn’t just about staying clean. It’s about building a life worth staying clean for.”
That life begins in our dining room, where no one eats alone. Where volunteers serve with genuine smiles. Where second helpings are always available. Kevin found more than food here. “I believe God led me here,” he shares, “to a place where I could heal not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. It’s safe, supportive, and filled with people who genuinely care.”
