With Compassion and Love in Your Heart

Corneitha didn't struggle with alcohol or drugs—as so many of the women who turn to us do—just life. She'd lost her job, so she couldn't pay her rent or buy food. She had nothing. She was down on her luck and down on her life. She needed a place to stay while she completed Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) training and found a job. But most of all, she needed our compassion.

"We kept telling her, 'you can do it,'" says Kathy Newton, the director of Bridgeport Rescue Mission's women's shelter. “We provided bus tokens so she could get to training and a sack lunch so she could keep up her strength.” After eight weeks, she completed the program. Now she's out every day looking for a work, excited about what the future holds.

Through our New Life Discipleship Program, downtrodden souls like Corneitha find the encouragement and direction to start their lives over. We offer women who are homeless—and often battling addiction—a safe environment where they can grow spiritually, emotionally and academically through courses like overcoming crisis, financial management, GED preparation and Bible study.

Yet, while they all come to the Mission under unique sets of circumstances and with heartaches only they can describe, “love is the one single thing our residents need most,” Kathy says.
